Folks, censorship/deplatforming/suppression-of-alternative-viewpoints/"thought-suppression" is *already* rapidly metastasizing.

This is going to get worse before it gets better. It's going to get more common and more extreme, spread to different topics, countries, and platforms, and—critically—the censors will start censoring information about censorship, so it'll be hard to tell what's happening.
I'm writing to you via twitter to tell you about censorship/deplatforming/thought-suppression on Facebook, but it has *already* also come to Twitter, not only by the "hard thought-suppression" of manually banning or flagging problematic accounts, but more importantly by …
… the "soft thought-suppression" of the Twitter Top Tweets AI automatically hiding things from you. You might not see this, even though you follow me on twitter or your tweeps have retweeted this.
And even if you do see this or things like it, what if nobody else that you know sees this or anything like it? None of your friends will understand what you're talking about it you bring it up.
The "soft thought-suppression" that inevitably results from centralized control over everyone's conversations is more powerful than we've yet understood. (The "hard thought-suppression" that becomes the topic of debate is the tip of the iceberg.)
I'm convinced that *there is no possible policy* about content-controls that could realistically be implemented by centralized platforms that could prevent this problem from snowballing until it threatens our democracy and society itself.
The only glimmer of hope that I see are attempts to make it physically impossible for centralized orgs to exercise control over everyone's words and thoughts, such as Zuckerberg's proposal to encrypt Facebook, Jack Dorsey's proposal to decentralize Twitter (Project Bluesky), etc.
Note that there are currently two credible new laws in consideration by the U.S. legislators which would — I think — effectively outlaw that!
In the meantime—and forever—when you're faced with somebody who has an inexplicable, frustrating, outrageous perspective, don't allow yourself to believe that you're part of the reality-based-community and they're not! That's not what's happening. Be patient with them.
And, switch to Latest Tweets not Top Tweets. Top Tweets is automatically self-optimized by an AI, whose internal logic no human understands, but who gets rewarded if it increases https://twitter.com 's financials. It's soft thought-suppression. https://twitter.com/zooko/status/1262886560841691136
៚ (Pls retweet, tell me why i'm wrong, etc. Thanks, tweeps. You are important to my life. ❤)
P.S. I think a necessary ingredient in any sustainable, scalable, open society like the one I see glimmers of hope for, is a fair and open money system, which is why I've devoted my life to Zcash.
P.P.S. Switching from Top Tweets to Latest Tweets is merely a temporary stop-gap measure. It won't work for long, especially if more people do it. The problem isn't that agents are getting smarter, the problem is that the agents you rely on are loyal to someone else (a corp).
… In other words, I'm not calling for a return to the good old days of no AI, where we had to do everything manually, I'm calling for everyone to have an AI *that is loyal exclusively to them*, and not to any government or corporation.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. This is my Presidential Platform. An AI in every pot.
