The distance I’ve had from Kenya this past year was much needed...I realised that perhaps I should not get into public service because it’s thankless work in Kenya.

I know people aren’t motivated by gratitude, but still.
Kibwana declares presidential candidacy.

Within minutes, we have a smear campaign as well as concern trolls who warn him against running because he will lose.

We then have to ask what Kenyans want.

They say they want good candidates. But when they run, they are dissuaded.
Ory takes up a post on a government board.

For years people have said that if she were serious, she’d “change government from within” and stop “fighting from outside.”

She listens. In come the people claiming she’s in cahoots with the state.

Again we ask what Kenyans want.
In the comments of the post(s) above we have people saying they can’t wait for Boniface to “sell out” because they “know it will happen.”

Should he “sell out” and “join government” he will be derided until the end of time.

Again I wonder what Kenyans actually want.
I think I have an idea.

Kenyans want collective misery. They claim otherwise, but we can tell the truth from their actions.

There can be no meaningful/radical change coming from such a place.

It is the worst kind of setup.

Nothing anyone does will ever be enough.
Because you are damned if you want better for the country.

You are damned if you speak out because they will claim you’re being paid by Soros.

You’re damned if you go quiet because you’ve been bought by the BBI gravy train.

You’re definitely damned if you join government.
Which leaves us with whinging, which is what Kenyans want to do and mistake it for progress.

Because what we want is collective misery.

It’s become apparent that my work is perhaps in other spheres.

It’s sad, but maybe it’ll get better and I’ll change my mind. But I doubt it.
