i have avoided all think pieces about beyoncé’s coming film, Black is King, but i think you guys need to understand something. those of you saying she is milking the african narrative. milking as what? fresh milk or powered? cos last i checked the african tribute album “The Gift”
did very poorly on the charts. it’s safe to say that that album was boycotted so she defs didn’t make any money from it. what exactly is she benefiting from the african narrative you all are so pained about. that she will be praised as an african or what? balance me quickly.
while on the subject, some of you were frothing at the mouth with “misrepresentation”. it’s amazing how much you have deduced from a one minute clip. but let me remind you, we are talking about Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter, first of her name. there is no way in heaven or hell
that beyoncé wouldn’t have done proper research for this visual album. the amount of black african creatives on her team alone, should assure you that she is definitely on track and would not risk misrepresenting anyone’s culture or traditions. her work ethic boasts of her
knowledge in the projects she has done. she buries herself deep in research so let’s read that misrepresentation song for now. watch the movie and then we’ll see what or where misrepresentation is.
for a long time the african narrative has been poor children, mud houses and hunger even to the extent that the african americans don’t consider us blacks because they think we chase lions for breakfast, break coconuts for water and run round fires at night for entertainment!
she is showing to the world, the royalty of africa, the spirituality and the splendor we possess. and mekunu is shouting that she’s milking the african narrative? kwasia!!!
the films done in africa so portray the western culture that you doubt for a second if you are watching a movie done by africans. we rebuke our culture and tradition and opt for the white man’s standards on what is beautiful and acceptable and lovely.
that’s why nigerian children will bear kayon, or jaden or darren. when we have names that have power and meaning?? so please someone then comes to showcase africa in the most beautiful way possible, paying attention to detail and DOING WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE!!!
and mekunu (again), is frothing at the mouth about misrepresentation. if we were so proud of our culture, we would be honored. let me tell you why people have a problem with that coming film.
they are angry because they haven’t expressed and showcased their culture and tradition as beautifully as beyoncé has done (mind you we have only seen a one minute clip). they are angry because beyoncé, a “foreigner”, got to do it first before them.
and they are angry because they didn’t accept it sooner. i am personally so excited to see the movie (and yes disney plus isn’t available in africa but we all watched insecure & GOT & all the other series so what’s tea sweetie?)
also, let me just say that the amount of black creatives on that film that i have seen alone is just giving me joy!!!! i am so so proud!!!
