cw: "the surgery"

I don't make posts, let alone threads, about being trans too often. It's something i like to keep under wraps for my own comfort, but as someone who's privileged to have health care, and health care that really works with me, i should speak about this. 1/10
cw: "the surgery"

I'm looking at getting a vaginoplasty, which is a cosmetic vagina on someone who has a penis. This thread is meant to denote some of the requirements to have this procedure, many of which are understandable due to health risks for the procedure. 2/10
Req 1: Diagnosis of Gender Dysphoria

Not only does this diagnosis need to confirm the whole situation, their gender gender dysphoria diagnoses only last for 1 year, meaning that every year, you have to go through a new gender evaluation to allow you to get new services 3/10
keep in mind, this does not extend to services that already exist, such as if you get hormones one year, you can continue to get hormones and see your endocrinologist if your diagnosis expires. 4/10
Req 2/3: Primary Care Physician seen within 12 months, physical issues deemed stable.

This, coupled with the next requirement (BMI < 40), is pretty understandable, given the circumstances of what we're trying to make happen. 5/10
Req 4: Mental health and presentation (multiple requirements)

This is where things get kinda fucky. This may not be the case with everyone, but I am required to have 2 mental health recommendation letters, i must live in my "affirmed gender" for more than 12 months... 6/10
I must have been on hormones for 12 months or more and prescribed and monitored by a physician (i've done a pretty bad job about communication but i've been on hormones for 3 years), and my estrogen levels must meet a specific range. 7/10
I meet all of these requirements besides the letters, but they still kinda make me cringe at the sight of them. Things like living as affirmed gender for 12 months can be pretty questionable as a requirement because many people may have bad enough dysphoria that they cant 8/10
Req 5: LOTS OF TESTS FOR BODILY FUNCTION

This includes liver function, kidney function, cholesterol, the whole works. I must not have smoked for 90 days, updated vaccines, following mental health treatment plans, and no self-harm or psych hospitalizations. 9/10
That's basically it. I tried to shorten it for length's sake, but yeah, quite a bit, some more reasonable than others. This thread is meant to help inform others of the types of things we have to see and deal with when trying to go through medical procedures. 10/10
