So... I am genuinely unlikable.
I mean, Twitter likes.
Yesterday, after a few years on Twitter, I had my first thread blow up... and I don’t have game. I’m not skilled at this.
At least the tweet itself, which shattered my record for most likes, was a solid tweet.
A story. 1/

JK Rowling is a transphobe, I have known this for years but I have kept my thoughts to myself until she decided to stop dog whistling and start yelling from the mountain top. Overt transphobia is where I draw the line, and I have been vocal to her and about her since. 2/
Yesterday, my comment to her got the pole position. Yay...
And suddenly I was likeable, Eeep!
Likes aren’t everything, because that pole position sure brought out the worst Death Eaters, and got them commenting on my sub thread. People so transphobic they forgot Twitter TOS. 3/

So I started blocking folks who violated Twitter policy, which caused an uprising amongst those I hadn’t (yet) blocked. And my God, if I lost my cool for a second, these cruel bigots would have had my scalp... so I am on my best behavior. 4/
This is all happening on a cherished children’s lit author’s page, mind you. An author who taught a generation to question flawed authority and to stand up against hatred and bigotry... meanwhile her fans are treating me like a mudblood. 5/
Block, block, block, report... have a conversation... block, report, block, block...
Soon my thread is looking like a half deconstructed Jenga tower... and the remaining posters I can see are starting to feel like Dumbledore’s Army. 6/

Meanwhile, thanks to the magic of Twitter, the transphobes I had blocked were still drawing more of their ilk to my thread by simply having their tweets seen by like minded bigots... block, block, report, block... but my post was still incredibly likable. 7/
I am unlikable on Twitter, so this likable thread became extra important to me. It was getting attention and it wasn’t some stupid trite post that ran away with the likes which is my usual experience, it was an important post, so I‘m defending it like it is my last stronghold. 8/
And then it came to me. There is a word in the English language that describes what Rowling was displaying.
Umbrage. 9/

Alanis never wrote about irony quite like I experienced yesterday in Rowling’s thread.
I am not sure I like being likable.
Look what being likable did to her.
