the israeli and palestine conflict (historical background) explained - a thread
the conflict between israel and palestine started almost 100+ years ago. britain took control of the area known as palestine at the time after the ruler of that part of the Middle East (the ottoman empire) was defeated in WW1.
that land was settled by a jewish minority and an arab majority. tensions between the two groups grew when the “international community” gave britain the task of giving a sort of national home IN palestine FOR the jewish people.
as you can guess, the palestinian people were not for this at all, so between the 1920s & 40s, the number of jews arriving there grew, with many fleeing from persecution in europe and seeking a homeland after the Holocaust of WWII.
violence between the british, arab, and jewish people countinuted to grow. in 1947, the UN voted for palestine to be split into separate jewish and arab states, with Jerusalem becoming an international city. the plan was accepted by the jewish but not the arabs.
after not being able to solve the problem, in 1948 the british government left and jewish leaders declared an official jewish state in that land. as you might have guessed the palestinian people objected and war followed afterwards.
hundreds of thousands of palestinians fled or were forced out of their homes in what they called Al Nakba, (نكبة), which translates to “the catastrophe”. but by the time the fighting ended the israeli people owned most of the land.
because there was never a peace agreement, each side blamed the other. there were more wars and fighting in the decades which followed. most communities to this day are at a conflict and the palestinian people are still suffering.
