I've decided to split my usual end of year best books review into two parts- mid and end of year review- so thread for first half of the year incoming:
F- Fiction, NF- Non-fiction.
Them: adventures with extremists- Jon Ronson. (NF) Ronson is one of the most readable authors out there and this book is quite a treat. The section with Omar bakri is just jaw-dropping. Strong 'should I even be laughing at this?' energy.
The road to little dribbling-Bill Bryson (NF)

Do you even need me to tell you to read Bryson? If so, are we even friends? This is a kind of sequel to 'notes from a small island' and of course it's very funny
The girl with seven names- Hyenseo Lee

It's a North Korean defector's story so it's very grim and heartbreaking throughout. If you can handle an endless catalogue of horror and brutality, this is a vital read.
Bad blood-John Carreyrou (NF)

Carreyrou broke the Elizabeth Holmes Theranos scam and this is a detailed account of that story in all its demented glory. It's a mix between a corporate drama, a legal thriller and a cautionary tale textbook. It is seriously terrific.
We are never meeting in real life-Samantha Irby (NF)

Series of very funny and uncomfortably honest essays on everything from race to sex. I don't know what else to tell you except-brace yourself.
Being a beast- Charles Foster (NF)

Fam, I don't even know how to describe this book without sounding insane but if you like....weirdness I guess? You will like this.
The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives-Lola Shoneyin(F)
Gripping tale about 4 women married to the eponymous Baba Segi as their past as well as their present is slowly revealed. It is very funny as well as sad and heartbreaking. It also has a tasty Shyamalan-eque twist at the end
21 lessons for the 21st century-Yuval Noah Harari (NF)

If you have read 'Sapiens' then you don't need me to pitch this to you. Not as mind-blowing as that book but still a really good read.
Some of the books I tweeted about somehow ended up in their own Twitter siberia outside the thread. Don't know how I managed that.
