"I'm so excited" Fred VanVleet deadpans to open his video conference call.
"Pretty concerned," VanVleet says about increased cases, but he has put his trust in the team and league. Is "trying to be optimistic about" it being safe in bubble.
VanVleet says his family not being there was actually a reason he was comfortable with it. He'll have a sense of how risky it is before making a decision on bringing his family. Says he respects players who sat out for whatever reason.
"I've been gone a week, I miss my kids already." VanVleet says his current plan would be to bring his family out once they're allowed but he'll evaluate at that time.
VanVleet says team hasn't determined specifically what they'll do from call-to-action standpoint, but it's being discussed. "We know basketball's a distraction...how do we make sure that we're still taking care of our responsibility?" Pushing selves, teams, league to do more.
VanVleet: "It's on our mind every day, and we're really doing work behind the scenes. Not just for now because it's cool on social media to post Black Lives Matter" (but for real, lasting change)
VanVleet says he would have supported sitting out if players mobilized in that way. Understands the business side, too. "This is not gonna end this summer, regardless, or these next couple months...Our fight is long-term." Trusts that he's doing enough and will continue to.
VanVleet hasn't decided what he'll have on his jersey yet but likes the idea. "People will always look back on these games and the first thing they'll see" is a Black fist on the court, Breonna Taylor on a jersey, etc.
