In the "Is Christianity white supremacist" debate, one of the worst responses to the Ethiopian Coptic Church/southern New Christendom is "Yeah but they don't influence Christianity."
1) Just because you haven't heard of something doesn't mean it isn't influential 2) Personally impressing you, American Tweeter, is not a test of a religious tradition's legitimacy 3) You're right, maybe they don't influence your local church very much. That's a real shame.
But in that case, what do you want? Do you want black and brown Christian voices to be elevated and centered, or do you want them to be shuttled offstage because they're white supremacist? Because the latter doesn't really sound all that anti-racist to me.
Also *Coptic Christians are insanely influential in Christian history*, and the fact that you think they aren't shows that you have bought the idea that American megachurches invented Jesus hook, line, and sinker.
I completely acknowledge that white supremacy has infiltrated and tainted the American church, and "But James Cone" is CLEARLY not an answer to that. But let's center and elevate our brown and black neighbors instead of writing off THEIR voices, too.
