Like I said, we need to acknowledge that life for us has not reached a point where we can afford certain luxuries and the finer things in life. So we really need to be prudent with how we use the little money that we have. PG: Most of the things I am gonna say may be hurting.
1. Cut unnecessary costs as I will list them below.
a) DSTV
Let's quantify this, paying 350 for a year equates to P4200.00. Let that sink in P4200. 00. Just so you don't have FOMO of Uyajola99. Fam, I know you want to have a social life but not at such cost.
b) EATING OUT
Rib night, di hot wings, etc these are money gobblers trust me. I know most of us think I only go once every month go iteboga after getting paid. Yet if for argument sake I use P100, then in a year I have used P1200. Madi a di braai pack di le 18 or di combo tse 4!
c) LUNCH AT WORK
Under this, I am also referring to that magwinya + dinawa/sebete/mafresh at work every day. Let's argue it's never both lunch and the foods mentioned above that is P15 every day. 15 x 20 days x 11 months, to cater for leave + holidays = P3 300. A go pakiweng.
d) AIRTIME
I am not saying people shouldn't buy airtime but have you realized how much airtime you buy in a month? The small nzamelas or top up through cell-banking that you make? Normalize buying airtime in 'bulk' during promotional weekends where it doubles. This saves a lot.
e) RENT
Most of us in Gaborone re berekela rente hela. Mme we need to lower down ourselves and rent houses that we can afford. No need to pressure yourself into a house with all the amenities and rooms on a small stipend you get. We should also normalize living in 1 rooms to save
I don't need to remind people how paying between P1000 - P2500 cost you by the end of the year. But I can remind you that you really don't need to live in that bigger house when you can save money for a time when you won't be working at all.
f) ALCOHOL
You really don't need to be going out every weekend and/or drinking in the same frequency. Batho ba ba berekang ba o skwa ithaa o re ba nwa every weekend ba chenchana. Beke e go nwa ba, beke ele go nwa ba bangwe. Wena o itepatepanya le bone? Gape ba amogela bo 15k.
2. LEARN TO SAVE MONEY
When someone says save money people always think gatwe baa P3000 kgothokgo mo account. No. Start small, as low as you can afford. P50 every month is P600 after 12 months.
P100 = P1200
P200 = P2400
P250 = P3000 this is money no one can just give to you.
MOTSHELO
Sometimes saving on your own is difficult. Get friends and create motshelo. A small number is always ideal with the biggest objective being to learn or start saving. At first interest making shouldn't be priority. As long as yall are saving money, that is something.
As a parting word. Stop go itsenya pressure about a certain life that is beyond your means. Don't be fooled by social media. People are struggling hela like the rest of us legale ke sa balele magodu ba ba jang madi a puso.
Lastly, yall need to give up on DRIP. We need to stop buying expensive clothing. Motho o tlaa reka setlhako se le one at a cost of P999 mme a ka reka more than 4 pairs with Tha kind of money which will last more because less wear. Ke kgona go kgaba without breaking the bank
