#Thread for new museum activism, collectives, groups:

The last few weeks has seen a dramatic rise in museum activism on social media. This comes after museum execs & boards have resisted community accountability and internal reform for decades, our prof. associations too 1/
A lot of these groups are new, and like you we’re trying to keep up with so much happening, so sharing a running list here. Please reply/dm with any new groups missing

Another new group:
Artists For Workers http://artistsforworkers.org
“we are a group of artists using our skills—hacking, design, etc—to take aim at institutions who refuse to support their workers and communities”
http://Newmuseum.net  /4
5/ The open letters coming from groups of museum workers right now are amazing and need to be added to this thread too. New one out today from “over 40 former employees of MOCAD, an organization that has less than 20 people in its staff directory”: https://www.mocadresistance.com/
6/ And now https://abetterguggenheim.com/  and abetterguggenheim on insta. New groups of art museum staffers/former staffers continue to form, publicly demanding transparency and accountability. Many individuals and groups have before but not at this scale, at museums all across the US.
7/...by our count, there are now groups of staff/former staff going public to advocate change at:

VMFA
PAFA
SFMOMA
ICP
Guggenheim
Metropolitan/MoMA/Gugg
NGA
AAM
NOMA
MOCAD

Who’s missing? And this is in addition to the union drives seeking change at PMA and Carnegie Museums.
8/ Ok adding these new staff actions to this thread so we can all keep track. Things are moving fast, yall are busy:

@NMAfA former staff letter. No social account that we’ve seen yet, will update if we do. https://twitter.com/amtransparency/status/1283396874670673922
9/ @GettyMuseum staff letter that went public late yesterday. Letter addresses Getty’s “unparalleled resources” yet persistent inequity.

Getty is one of the richest museums in the world. Getty Trust endowment was $6.9b in 2017.

10/ And a new social campaign to follow from @DIADetroit staff/former staff: @DIAstaffaction

The linked @nytimes article offers context of several high profile resignations at DIA. Most recently, @AndreaMontielS who wrote on it: https://medium.com/@andreamontiel23/no-longer-in-extremis-9aa1c5996f35
