Next up in my #2020PlayerBreakdown series for #fantasyfootball is:

Darius Slayton, WR
New York #Giants
6’1” 190 lbs
Age: 23

Let’s get started...
2019 Year End Statistics:

Games: 14

Rec: 48
Targets: 84
Yds: 740
TD: 8
Y/R: 15.4
Catch%: 57.1

Touches: 48
Total Yds: 740
Total TD: 8
Fumbles: 0
Being drafted in the 5th-round last year did not stop Darius Slayton from leading the Giants WR core in snaps (65.76%).

In fact, the NYG followed his rookie season up by bypassing the WR position all together in the 2020 Draft.

One of the deepest WR classes in some time.
Slayton was able to develop great chemistry w/ NYG QB Daniel Jones as well.

But 8 TD on 48 catches is unlikely to repeat itself, especially considering that he saw only 7 red-zone targets.

Although you could argue this shows just how dangerous he can be.
Slayton led the NYG w/ 15.4 ypr, and he’s the priority deep threat on a team w/ plenty of passing options (Shepard, Tate, Engram, & Saquon).

Although it’s important to note that Shepard (concussion) & Tate (suspension) both missed time last season. https://twitter.com/pff_fantasy/status/1274696608219881479
However, neither Tate or Shepard offer the speed that Slayton does, so expect him to retain the Alpha role in the WR group.

From Week 8-17, he was the WR21 in total fantasy points, including a dead week 11 (BYE).

An improved NYG offense should give him a WR2 floor w/ WR1 upside
In 2019 Slayton was used as a mid-to-deep target w/ an aDOT of 14.3.

A full offseason to prepare w/ Daniel Jones could allow him to develop into a more complete WR in his sophomore season.

Similar 2nd year breakouts have happened w/ WR such as DeSean Jackson & TY Hilton.
One of the main things holding Slayton back is the stigma attached to being a 5th rd pick.

If he were drafted in the 1st or 2nd round w/ his production he would be touted as a strong breakout candidate.

But one question mark for fantasy will be his target share...
Slayton was actually just as productive w/ Tate/Shepard on the field as he was when one of them was missing in 2019.

5.8 targets & 60.7 ypg with both & 6.5 targets & 53.1 ypg w/ one missing

Which is to say his floor is intact w/ nothing but ceiling above as Jones’ fav target
As stated before, Slayton scored a TD on 16.6% of his catches in 2019.

That is not going to happen again.

However, Slayton should be in for more targets this season to go w/ his high-end YPR.

90+ targets & 1,000+ yds incoming?
Slayton’s 16-game pace as a rookie was 55 rec on 96 targets for 845 yds & 9 TD.

Things to consider:
- TD pace regression
- Chemistry w/ QB
- New OC (Jason Garrett)
- Health of teammates

What should we expect in 2020?
The NYG ranked 18th w/ 21.3 ppg last season under former OC Mike Shula.

New HC Joe Judge was hired to focus on developing the young offensive weapons like Jones, Saquon, Engram, & Darius Slayton.

Jason Garrett should help modernize this team as the new OC.
Since 2007, Garrett’s offense (DAL) has ranked in top-10 in points seven times.

That’s good news for Slayton as the primary deep threat.

NYG threw the ball the 8th-most times per game last season, which continue/improve under Garrett (and subpar defense).
Past Garrett offenses involved heavy TE useage (Witten), an alpha WR1 (Bryant), & targets to RBs (Murray/Jones).

The 2012 Cowboys featured triple-digit targets for Witten (147), Bryant (138) & Austin (119), while utilizing the RB, enabling 5 fantasy-relevant pass-game options.
So how about Slayton’s current teammates?

Did you know there wasn't a single game in 2019 where Shepard, Tate, Slayton, Engram, & Saquon were on the field together?

Not one.

This jumps out as a red flag to some, but as discussed earlier, it did not seem to impact Slayton.
Sadly, w/ Shepard’s history of concussions, Engram’s history in general, & Tate’s age, the NYG looks unlikely to ever be fully intact.

But a healthy Slayton, on a 79.4% Snap Share, finished Top-20 among all WR in deep targets, YPR, & FP per target.
A healthy NYG roster should enhance Slayton’s game, not detract from it.

Slayton’s 10.32 (95th percentile) Catch Radius & (87th percentile) hand size are perfect for WR1 upside, he just needs the opportunity.

In 2020 he may get it.
Daniel Jones was one of just 11 QBs w/ 5 games of 300-plus passing yds in 2019 (only started 12 games).

Rather than draft a WR they opted to help their QB by taking OT Andrew Thomas (No. 4 overall pick), OT Matt Peart (No. 99) and G Shane Lemieux (No. 150).
Expect Jones to keep throwing the ball all season though, as only the Dolphins (10) allowed 30+ points more than the Giants (9).

Spoiler alert: They did nothing to improve this season.
Slayton produced three Top-12 performances in 2019, including overall WR2 & WR3 performances in Weeks 10 (NYJ 5-154-2) & 14 (at PHL) 10-121-2).

The only reason you didn’t know that was likely die to Slayton being overshadowed by “higher profile” Rookie WR. https://twitter.com/nextgenstats/status/1233185237380653056
Important to know:

NYG first 5 opponents are all ranked in the top half of defenses for FP allowed to WRs: Steelers (7th), Bears (4th), 49ers (12th), Rams (15th), and Cowboys (6th).

If you don’t draft Slayton, there may be a buying opportunity as we approach midseason.
Bottom line:

Darius Slayton is being drafted as the WR38 & has the floor of a WR2.

Forget ceiling, that in itself is value.

Give me Slayton & his ceiling in the 8th/9th round to possibly outproduce TY Hilton in the 4th.
What to expect from Darius Slayton in 2020:

Receptions: 62
Targets: 98
Yards: 930
TD: 7

Expect Shepard/Tate to fight over targets in the slot w/ Evan Engram while Slayton claims the throne as the WR1 in NY

The NYG will continue to throw a ton this year, but be more efficient
