Keir Starmer not covering himself in glory here. (It’s also important to know that “defund the police” is about reallocating some £ to other public services: community outreach, mental health, education). You can disagree with that but it isn’t nonsense.
I think “defund the police” does not accurately convey that, or that delegating might well help the police, under such pressure to fill so many gaps. We should fund the police *&* other public services adequately. + it’s incredibly ignorant to call BLM a “moment”. Disappointing.
Of course I know why he’s saying we shouldn’t defund the police. He’s polling brilliantly, middle-ground pitching & as I say phrae misleading. I’m so glad we have someone smart in charge + could win. But he shouldn’t call it “nonsense”; just say eg. we shouldn’t have to choose.
As for essentially dismissing BLM as a “moment” when it’s about hundreds of years of systemic racism is just wrong. Don’t take a knee & then say this has nothing to do with organisations, when it has everything to do with them. That bit was really grim & so disappointing.
Loving all the men under this tweet telling me that Keir is pitching for the centre ground & wants to win back voters, as if that wasn’t the most obvious thing in the world; 101 politics. I’m saying he could easily have said we should be funding all of our public services etc
And I just think it is incredibly painful for POC to have Starmer et al take a knee & then just act like BLM is merely about George Flloyd. As someone else pointed out, talk about the Lammy report. The scandal of Windrush. These things aren’t L/R but basic human decency.
