Here's why cultural appropriation is wrong and why it can happen to Filipino wear too since y'all want to invalidate anyone's concern for THEIR culture

a thread by a Filipino: https://twitter.com/swallalisaa/status/1277463265983905794
What is cultural appropriation? To put it simply, it's when one appropriates another's culture WITHOUT knowing the historical background, significance, and identity it holds.

Appropriation includes using any piece of a culture as an aesthetic. E.G. using traditions for outfits.
Cultural appropriation is a contrast to cultural appreciation- which is a product of cultural exchange. It is a contrast bc cultural appreciation is knowing what that piece of culture holds and you wear it WITHOUT ignorance.
To respond to the comments: Didn't momoland wear Filipiniana and bring around the Philippine Flag?

The reason they wore that was because they were expressing their gratitude to their Filipino fans bc it was the Filipinos who showed the most support for their group and songs.
And what does that tell us? It was cultural appreciation.

The use of Ganesh - a Hindu God - as a prop is not limited to cultural appropriation. It's outright disrespecting a religion.

To add: cultural appropriation also includes STEALING or CLAIMING other cultures
So y'all saying that Ganesh, a Hindu God as explained multiple times but Desis, is "thai culture" is cultural appropriation.

Someone mentioned that they learned braids are CA too. So I will explain why its CA.
Braids are often looked down on by people outside black communities. In fact, black people were shaved during the time of slavery bc the way their hair was braided proved their societal status and their overall identity. Slavery does not allow individual identity, so that was+
taken away from them.

In the 1970s, when a model wore her hair in cornrows, people thought it was "trendsetting" and so anyone outside of black communities started wearing them as a trend.
While everyone who isnt black was getting praised for "trendsetting" braids, actual black people were refused to wear their braids to school or work. Their braids limited them.

WATCH MORE HERE:
What those "trendsetters" did was completely erase the significance of braids. They thrived while black people, those who owned that culture, were deprived of opportunities. So it was STEALING and therefore OFFENSIVE.

So stop talking over DESI ppl that its thai culture "too"
Now, I finally address cultural appropriation in the Philippine context.

From a simple Wikipedia search, you will know the significance of the baro't saya. It is not limited to the Spanish design of the outfits.

READ HERE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barong_tagalog
Case in point, baro't saya when thoroughly dissected goes a long way from the typical Spanish design. It literally means "outfit". It's there.... on the wikipedia page.

As you must know, the Philippines is a highly indigenous country.
So indigenous and so rich with culture, that different tribes that continue to exist to this day have their own ways of expressing their identity through the way they dress. The materials used, the patterns weaved into the clothes, etc. These are all their identities.
If you are more socially, historically, and politically informed, you would know that the indigenous people in our country are marginalized. They are victims of modernization, having their identities stripped away from them.
When we wear their traditional clothes for school programs (I'm sure Filipinos can relate to this) it's not to mock, but it's to celebrate the diversity in our country and the identities each outfit hold.

And so we get to the juicy part.
If you must know, indigenous tribes from the Philippines were abducted during the American colonization here in the Philippines- a few years after we gained "independence" from the Spanish.
After abduction, our indigenous brothers and sisters were taken to "Human Zoos" in Coney Island wherein they were not only tied up, they were forced to act out their culture for exhibits in front of Americans.

If you don't get it yet: they were treated like they were not+
humans, subjected into inhumane environments simply because they were INDIGENOUS. https://twitter.com/marinamaral2/status/941600642694565888

Like Black people, we were ostracized in America. We were subject to racism by Americans and including the Spanish.

Did you ever wonder why Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental are named the way they were? Bc inhabitants in those regions were dark skinned, hence "negros".
(pronounced neh-gros, from the spanish/tagalog pronunciation)

So to confidently say (with IGNORANCE to cultural backgrounds) that you would be okay seeing them wear our traditional outfits for AESTHETIC PURPOSES is soooo unbelievable that I'm glad im making this thread.
So before you start speaking on behalf of Filipinos, think of the cultural context of the idea you're trying to promote.

Also, don't speak over other people who expresses their culture/ religion being disrespected bc you don't have a say in that.
Hold ANYONE accountable for appropriation and INFORM yourself on why it's wrong and how something is deemed appropriation.

This goes for everything outside of K-Pop bc cultural appropriation can happen to every culture.
Fellow Filipinos please read and RT this thread to spread information huhuhu i love reading about erased PH history which is why i wrote this thread.
HI EVERYONE!!

Someone informed me that the use of the word "desi" as someone who isn't South Asian is inappropriate. I have a vvv close Indian moot and she hasn't told me about this information but I'll hold accountability if it turns out to be inappropriate
So in advance, I'm sorry for being ignorant about the use of the word if it is indeed inappropriate. I'll make sure to refrain from using it from then on. Take care everyone!
To emphasize: Seeing our faves wear traditional wear does not ensure cultural appreciation ESPECIALLY if they don't know the cultural context of the piece. Not knowing the cultural context and yet wearing those outfits=appropriation. THANKS!
Cultural appropriation is not limited to mockery of cultures!!!
Just found out its the same blonk that said these.
