Last Thursday this beautiful wee grasshopper appeared on the bedroom windowsil. No idea how it got there, or how it had lost both its back legs

It stayed the night and then we put it outside on the grass where it peacefully passed away

Recently deceased invertebrates make the best subjects for microscopy...and I& #39;d never found a RIP grasshopper before.

Grasshoppers have 2 sets of wings...a smaller set of forewings and a larger set of hindwings. They are beautifully patterned and ridged to make them very strong
As well as their powerful hind legs which provide the explosive jumping power they have 4 other legs which have claws at the end and spikes along the tibia.
They have a large compound eye and a much smaller simple eye...I never know this

At the rear of the abdomen are the circus and ovipositor used for laying eggs and burying them in shallow soil holes.
