These non-Maori academics throwing around pepeha is getting really old. I don't care how "connected" you feel to mountains and rivers, to claim these as your own not only cancels the local whanau, hapu & iwi, but also claims a relationship to me that you do not have. Don't do it.

The last few hours here have been challenging, encouraging, and most of all a pleasure. I'm off to bed now though so here's a summary of my basic whakaaro when it comes to pepeha:

Learning a pepeha is fine - just learn your own. Don’t appropriate the pepeha of other whanau, hapu, and iwi - and if you do, prepare to be challenged on it. You may never be challenged, but you open yourself to challenge the moment you recite that to which you have no whakapapa.
