i went on a huge rant abt this on priv but honestly I’m kinda sick of bokutos mischaracterzation so i am here to summerazie it and yall Better Listen https://twitter.com/chiabutter/status/1276963885208293378">https://twitter.com/chiabutte...
bokuto is someone who is way more than his “emo mode” persona. he does not rely on akaashi 24/7, and hes not stupid, and i honestly wish you guys would stop portraying him as such
first of all, bokuto is emotionally intelligent. he’s able to accurately read people. he points out to kuroo that he pissed off tsukishima and calls him out on it.
+ he notices akaashi struggling on the court during the mujinazaka match and suggests akaashi sub out. he doesnt do this to be malicious, he does it because he understands that akaashi just needs a moment to get back in control, and the easiest way to do so is to remove the court
pressure from him. (it works because the next set akaashi is back) and then, not only does he help akaashi in that reguard, he talks w him after the match, and calls him out just the right amount to get akaashi back and focused.
hes also a catalyst to many character developments, he acts as a mentor to hinata, which is easily seen in the training camp chapters, but also shown throughout the entire nationals arc, as well as timeskip. he explains his ‘moment’ to tsukishima, which comes back into play
during the shiratorizawa match, where tsukishima has his own moment, and allows them to win the match. without him, i doubt karasuno would have done as well in the match. he provided them motivation and and a means of power (there’s obviously other factors in reguards to
winning the match but denying bokuto is one of them is denying a huge part of his character and the whole reasoning behind the third gym)
and speaking of bokuto helping characters w volleyball... he unknowingly helped akaashi /stay/ in volleyball. when we get akaashis backstory, hes shown as someone who doesnt really /care/ about vb. he doesnt show a dislike for it, but he doesnt show interest in for it either.
hes known as someone who does what hes told, serious, and overall a Good Kid (which is shown thru his characterization but thats another topic).. when his friend brings up his recommendation for fukurodani, he doesnt seem all that interested in going
but when he sees bokuto play, his whole view on volleyball changes. it isnt just some club to pass time anymore, bokuto makes akaashi want to play, WITH him. this is arguably the BIGGEST reason akaashi went to fukurodani, and if I’m being honest, if he never saw this match
i doubt he’d still be playing volleyball in high school. he had no real reason to continue, but bokuto gave him that reason to continue it. akaashi admired him, from the moment he saw him, right to the end.
he also refuses to put the blame on his teammates. hes the captain, and he shoulders all the responsibility, even if its not his. this is most accurately shown through this panel, when fukurodani lost nationals.
onto the next point, bokuto is not stupid schoolwise either. yall take the “failed math test” line WAY too seriously. if he was stupid or consistently failing his classes, he would absolutely NOT be captain. a captain is someone who is responsible and reliable both on and off the
court. a powerhouse school would want people to not only represent them athletically, but also academicly. furudate is big on accuracy, so it wouldnt be so far off to say bokuto would be benched or risk losing his captaincy if he was consistently doing bad in school.
thats not to say he cant struggle w subjects, or possibly have a learning disability which makes it hard for him to focus, but we know little to nothing about his actual academic grades.
ALSO, if bokuto was stupid, he wouldnt be using new words consistently, and asking about them to use them accurately. hes constantly increasing his vocabulary, and yall don’t give him enough credit for that.
also also, i don’t think you guys seem to realize that bokutos cross shots and line shots use a lot of calculations and taking into account of blockers and receivers. he has to think about this midair in just a few seconds, and also determine the power in which hes going to use
the biggest mischaracterization and the one that pisses me off the most is the portrayal of his emo modes. the fandom consistently makes it out to seem like hes a big baby and that he relies on akaashi 24/7. its unfair to his character to deny that he doesnt have these moods, or
that akaashi doesnt help him, but the extent that yall seem to think it is is.... questionable. yall seem to forget that bokuto is one year older, and didnt have akaashis help for an entire year.
also, bokuto has never cried in canon.
hes actually pretty good at keeping his emotions off court on wrap, and choses to go “hide” instead of throwing a fit when something doesnt go as planned.

and speaking of emo moods, stop saying itll come back. the mujinazaka match stated that emo mode is not coming back, and chapter 392 solidifed that.
bokuto koutarou did not say this for yall to say hes gonna have an emo mode again I’m sick its like yall completely erased his character development to push the narrative that hes a baby
also atsumu tells him “no emo modes” and bokuto tells him of course not. read between the lines people. emo mode is not coming back.
idk why this didnt add onto the thread but heres the rest of it https://twitter.com/bokutorou/status/1277435942379257858?s=21">https://twitter.com/bokutorou... https://twitter.com/bokutorou/status/1277435942379257858">https://twitter.com/bokutorou...
