While we're on the topic of systemic racism within Canadian media, I'd like to share an example where a company passed over a racialized candidate with proven success for a white candidate who caused a disaster - a thread 👇🏾
Before I left @CorusPR for @CBC Oct 2018 I was part of the interview process for the new @GlobalTV social media manager to replace me. My top pick was a racialized candidate who clearly demonstrated how they built an engaged social following around pop culture + TV like @GlobalTV
My boss pushed for a white woman whose track record did not compare to that of the racialized candidate. My boss gave reasoning that wasn't based on anything tangible. The white woman was hired and I showed her my secret to record results on @GlobalTV...listening to our audience.
On July 3, 2019 @GlobalTV put out the following tweets which went against the views of their audience. After fans called them out, @GlobalTV doubled down. Anyone familiar with Big Brother fans knows they're passionate. The fans started attacking the brand and even mentioning me.
While @GlobalTV was fighting fans, @theikawong called out their awkward phrasing. Ika said it sounded like an ignorant white person's bad impression of a Black person. I think they thought "sounding black" was my secret to success. Search "ain't nobody intend", get 1 result.
The @CorusPR employee who called me said Corus wanted to get me fired at @CBC and get my personal Twitter account shut down because of these tweets. They said I was bullying the social media manager when all I did was highlight their problematic language and my mentions/DMs.
The reliable source at @CorusPR heard Darcy MacNeil, Head of so.da & Digital Lifestyle for @CorusPR say they knew people at @CBC and @TwitterCanada who would get me fired and shut down my personal twitter account.
I told them it was a misunderstanding that could be explained if @CorusPR reached out to me. The next day Linkedin sent me a notification because there was a large increase in views of my profile. They were mostly Corus employees.
On July 16, 2019 I was terminated by @CBC without explanation despite asking the union, HR and my boss for an explanation.
I was told the industry is small and people talk. I just never expected people to talk like this in private. I'm sharing this story to add to the many voices calling on @CorusPR and @CBC to do the right thing. Since the industry is small, let's talk about the stories below 👇🏾
