A lot has been made of Kyrie Irving’s comments that basketball distracts from social issues.

There’s a better basketball player that made the same decision nearly a year ago.

A thread:
Maya Moore is a hero. She’s been a hero maybe her whole life. In highschool, she was a multi time player of the year winner. That’s nuts. No one ever does that.
In college, Maya Moore didn’t stop winning, cause winning was all she knew. She won two 🥇 at UConn in 09 and 10, 4x all American, 2x NCAA player of the year, 2x academic poy, 3x big East poy, 2x wooden award, etc. If there’s a basketball award in college, she won it... twice.
In 2011, she was drafted first overall to the Minnesota Lynx, and won 4 @WNBA titles, 13,15,17 AND IN 2011, the same year she was drafted!!
Over that span she won an mvp, a finals mvp, THREE all star mvps, rookie of the year, TWO OLYMPIC GOLDS, and Moore (get it). O, and also 3 straight Chinese titles and a EuroLeague title because WNBA players play overseas cause they pay better there
Seriously, the only basketball comparisons are Diana Turasi and Breanna Stewart. There is no nba comparison. Jordan didn’t win a title until 8 years after he was drafted, and didn’t win an mvp 92. Moore won it in her 3rd year. Her lifetime w/l record is 497-78. Obscene
But in 2019, she left all of that behind her to fight for criminal justice reform. She decided that the incarceration rates in the USA were abhorrent, and she was going to devote her time and energy to fixing a broken system.
And here’s the thing, she’ll probably succeed, because if there’s one thing that’s true about Moore, she’s a winner. She’s been working to specifically overturn the case of Jonathan Irons, who’s serving 50-life for a shooting he’s claimed to be innocent of the whole time.
And while Kyrie isn’t the best basketball player in the league, he’s really good. The Nets were paying him 142 million over 4 years. Moore was making 45k a year at the WNBA. When kyrie walks away, it’s commendable, but he isn’t risking his livelihood. Moore is.
Athletes should use their platforms to make a statement, and they should be praised when they do. But just take a moment to pay homage in the fact that the Lebron of the WNBA quit to pursue social justice.
