A solid 13-mile suburban yomp to Mottingham via Kidbrooke and back along the Green Chain via Eltham Palace and Severdroog Castle. Along with rampant hollyhocks, spotted a swan family with 8 cygnets lounging on the grass in Cator Park and a fleet of donkeys on King John’s Walk.
Today’s suburban oddesy: 12.5 miles Charlton-E Greenwich-Greenwich-Deptford-Lewisham-Ladywell-Catford-Hither Green-Lee-Blackheath Estate-Blackheath Standard-Charlton. A warm and windy hike beside the three great South East London watercourses: Thames, Ravensbourne and Quaggy.
These Sunday SE London park wanders are edging longer. Today, 15 miles, linking 15 different parks, through Greenwich Park, Brookmill Park, Telegraph Hill Parks, Nunhead Cemetery, Peckham Rye Park, One Tree Hill, Blythe Hill Fields, Ladywell Fields, Lewisham Park among others. – bei Charlton Railway Station (CTN)
Easing back into train travel for leisure, so took the train to Crayford (Zone 6) and walked home to Zone 3, including the length of the Shuttle Riverway, a LB Bexley path from the mouth [1] to the source [2] of the River Shuttle, a beautifully clear suburban ‘river’. [3]
[1] The Shuttle Riverway does not actually visit the mouth of the Shuttle, due to it being basically under the A2 and requiring a mile’s walk alongside SE London’s fastest dual carriageway to reach it.
[2] The Shuttle Riverway does not actually visit the source of the Shuttle, as this is lost somewhere in some deep undergrowth on Avery Hill and is completely dry af this time of year anyway.
[3] Despite these minor shortcomings,
and a silly diversion through some streets in Blendon (where?) became Sidcup Golf Course doesn’t let you follow the river, the Shuttle Riverway is a surprisingly lovely walk. Didn’t see the alleged water voles, but can believe they are there.
A bit more of an urban walk today, from Cannon Street to Charlton, in part along the river, but also via a series of Tower Hamlets’ lesser-known waterways.
Lots of waterfowl and farm life, and the usual excellent riverscapes.
I didn’t think anything could be quieter than Cannon Street station on a Sunday. Turns out it can be: Cannon Street station on a Sunday during a global pandemic and lots of engineering works.
