I've always been combative against outward attempts at censorship from conservative-minded entities because they were always the ones fighting against horror movies. But now, it's internal, capitalistically-motivated censorship that has me more worried. 1/8
All these streaming services preemptively pulling old episodes isn't helping representation in media. It's an attempt at hiding accessibility to media history because that's the right moneymaking decision. It's not about progression. It's about protecting an investment. 2/8
Recasting black cartoon characters with black voice actors?đź‘Ť Changing Splash Mountain?đź‘Ť But removing access to media that features some variation of blackface is trying to pretend it didn't happen. And more importantly, it ignores the most important element: context. 3/8
Context is king. Are there blackface portrayals that need to be highlighted as deliberately and aggressively offensive? Yes. But ignoring context is detrimental to good media literacy. It's the same mindset that brings us that awful take on THE SHINING. 4/8
What's really unfortunate about all this is that it's detracting from legitimate and necessary discussions about systemic and historic racism. It's corporations dictating the conversation. Even I'm falling victim to that with this thread. 5/8
This is why physical media and piracy are becoming more important in the age of streaming dominance. Anything that preserves content is gonna be vital to ensuring access to library media. I'm not advocating for piracy as an alternative to legal access. Just as preservation. 6/8
I'm just disappointed as someone who considers himself liberally-minded and progressive. I don't think these actions are helping anyone but the conglomerates that own access to this media. It's nothing but performative PR strategy. 7/8
