A small thread :

Swaroop Bhai was the 'gully ka Bhai' i.e. gunda who everyone stayed away from. Out of fear, you said paid respect to Swaroop Bhai - if you wanted a trouble free life in Bhayandar (East) of early 90s.

There were many other Bhais - small & big. East & West.
We were a group of college going teenagers living carelessly & fearlessly on Talav Road . It was the time when Bhayandar was sparsely populated, unlike, the dense slum that it is now. Due to abundance of cool guys & hottest girls in the Group (21) - Bhai types used to be jealous
For some reason - Swaroop Bhai (the one with Cow-boy hat & 8-10 flunkies) shifted base to Talav Road.
Heckling, taunting & eve-teasing became the norm.

Sunday: one of our friend got slapped by Swaroop Bhai's flunky when he had gone to buy Vada-Pav for all of us.
Two of us went down (from my 3rd floor flat) & bashed up Swaroop Bhai's flunkies badly.

Like solid maara.

Back home, when we were enjoying our bravado & Vada-Pav - glass bottles started hitting the balcony grills.

Swaroop Bhai, with his gang - throwing soda bottles from road
We did not respond.
So, himmat badh gayi usski.

Swaroop Bhai & 3-4 of his punters - rushed on 3rd floor with hockey sticks & soda bottles.

We were ready. Prepared. Cricket bat, gupti, hockey stick, brass knuckles.

He did not expect an assault. We attacked fiercely.
The fight happened in the staircase on 3rd floor.

First burst of blood from the nose of one of his lanky, another slipping down a flight of stairs due to a kick in his groin & Swaroop Bhai was a different man. He was like : Bhai log jaane do. Panga nahi lete. (Folded hand)
Swaroop Bhai: Lekin neeche galli mein kisiko bolne ka nahi. Apun log wapas Cabin Road chala jaayega. Idhar ko nahi aayega. Kissiko bolne ka nahi.

We didn't. But word has a way of going around. Everybody knew that Swaroop Bhai & gang got a sound thrashing from Talav Rd group.
I lived in Bhayandar for 1 year. Like a Bhai. No one messed with our lot. Ganpati, Navratri & Holi were celebrated on a huge scale. Like, never seen before in Bhayandar.

Moral : When u stand up to a fake bully, he surrenders.

Swaroop Bhai becomes Surender Bhai.
