Ask yourself why universities and other businesses seemingly do not want to rely on liability insurance, the usual tool for handling the legal costs of their own careless injuring of others. 1/
Here are some likely explanations, none of which are reassuring. 2/
Liability insurers, expert in risk assessment, have concluded that universities and other businesses are quite like to carelessly cause COVID-19 outbreaks. So, liability insurance is quite costly. To protect their profit margins and keep prices down, schools don’t want to pay. 3/
Alternatively, liability insurers are refusing to cover universities and other businesses for damages arising from COVID-19. This would mean the insurers do not see how businesses can operate non-tortiously enough to bring suits to a manageable level. 4/
I bet that universities operating wholly remotely in Fall 2020 are able to purchase affordable liability insurance as usual. 5/5
