Nellie was the culmination of what started as an agitation against outsiders(settled in Assam) which gradually turned against Bengali Hindus and muslims, which gradually zeroed against the Muslims.

What followed in the deadly night can be summed up as the worst massacre ever happened. As men ran away mostly women and children of the Muslim village were brutally killed after the village was surrounded. Unofficial figures put the Death at 3000.
The scars of Nellie refuse to heal and justice never served, one ASI of Police was transferred for the massacre as action. After more deaths and destruction the Assam accord was signed in 15th August 1985 ending bloodshed .
The immediate violence did stop but the hatred, misinformation, entnic/racial profiling against Bengali Muslims and Hindus gained momentum and reached almost in the entire Northeast.the hatred and discrimination has reached now the Indian mainland too.
The poor Bengali speaking Muslims were/are the worst sufferers till today. Racial slurs like Bangladeshi,Geda,illegal immigrant,Bongal have been normalised which sees no end. A whole community is branded,abused,legally harrassed and is a norm.
