This Milwaukee sex trafficking situation, and the alleged lack of police support, has me thinking about something that I once experienced.

Six years ago in Quincy, MA, I opened my front door and found a black toddler in a diaper on my stoop. A thread:
I walked outside and looked around to see if the baby’s mother or caretaker was nearby, but there was no one else outside. Babygirl wasn’t wearing shoes or clothes, just a diaper. I picked her up and walked up and down my street, but still, no mama.
Finally, not knowing what else to do, I called 911. I explained the situation to the dispatcher and was connected to my closest police station. I explained the situation - baby on my doorstep - and the guy said, “What is the child’s nationality?” I said “African-American.”
The guy said, “We’ll send someone over right away.” And then.....no one came. No police. No heroes. Just me and my baby buddy. Half an hour went by, and a woman comes running up the street looking for her daughter.
(Her front door was open, her daughter walked out without her realizing, I’m not sure how exactly it went down but this thread isn’t about that.) I gave her back her baby, I went inside, and I waited for the cops to show up. And guess what? They didn’t.
So when people say “who are you gonna call when you need help if not the police??!!” my answer is: I tried the police. They never came.

A huge portion of us are already living in an America without police. Perhaps it’s time we all try it.
