THREAD:

Hey #AcademicTwitter folks and #socialscience types of all substantive and methodological stripes.

I just had a crazy idea for a fun, post-tenure research project that doesn't belong to any particular discipline but might speak to any number of you. /1
I'm asking for feedback here (in the comments section, please). If the feedback is generally positive and any issues are addressable, I might actually write something up and submit it to my University's #IRB for approval to start in January 2021.

Here goes. /2
A few facts about me as a segue to the substance of this thread.

First, I'm a #polisci scholar by training. Happy associate professor of political science at @VillanovaU. Have done exclusively small-N #qualitative research to this point, but have been enlarging my... /3
... #quantitative toolkit as my research interests/plans have developed.

Second, I'm no big fan of #classicalmusic. Never have been, probably never will be. Believe me, I've tried. One of my best friends on the faculty at #Villanova has taken me to the Philly Orchestra a... /4
...few times. Imagine "Pretty Woman" but with Julia Roberts *not* enjoying the opera.

Third, there's one piece I do like: Maurice Ravel's " #Bolero." But not because I happen to have been exposed to it and liked it. No, I first learned of it when I read, between #undergrad... /5
...and #phdlife, Allan Bloom's Closing of the American Mind ( @UChicago @simonschuster). Bloom wrote on page 73 - this was in 1987 - that "Ravel's Bolero is the one piece of classical music that is commonly known and liked by [young people]."

After reading this... /6
...passage, I found a recording of #Bolero and listened to it.

About nine to ten minutes in, the meaning hit me like a ton of bricks and I laughed.

If you've never heard of/listened to this piece - there is absolutely nothing wrong with that - then go and listen to it. /7
