The state of Georgia adopted this flag in 1956. It was clearly an attempt to signal resistance against the federal government& #39;s encroachment on segregation and the Supreme Court& #39;s ruling in Brown v. Board of Ed.
This is the flag the state adopted in 2001 after years of debate. Notice that they couldn& #39;t quite give up the Confederate battle flag. They found a way to include it in a banner below the state seal. This flag lasted til 2003.
The current flag of the state of Georgia (left) is based on the Confederacy& #39;s First National Flag or Stars and Bars (right). Some states just can& #39;t quit the Confederacy.
The go-to book on the history of the Confederate battle flag is still John Coski& #39;s THE CONFEDERATE BATTLE FLAG: AMERICA& #39;S MOST EMBATTLED EMBLEM (2005). https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780674019836">https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780...
