we need to talk about dark & wild and why it's one of bts' best albums (bUt tHaT's My OpInIoN) : a track by track messy thread
intro : what am I to you
- the violins at the beginning and throughout the song are so essential to the mood of the song
- the shift between the use of a major scale (positive feelings) to the one of a minor scale (negative feelings) to represent the worsening of +
a relationship is very well thought of
- namjoon's lyricism, namjoon's delivery, kim namjoon himself : beautiful, magnificent I'm in love and it's MY fault he caught me slippin'
- really serves its purpose as an intro (sets the overall mood very well)
danger :
- the beatboxing that transitions seamlessly into an actual beat at the beginning,,, yup. those 10 seconds alone are enough to tell that you're about to hear a banger
- the ANGST of the lyrics represents so well the inner turmoil that comes with first relationships
- jungkook's vocal tone really shines in this song, the slight extra raspiness in the chorus adds a lot
-such a good title track honestly
- a wonderful fusion of hiphop (808 beat) and rock elements (guitar riffs)
war of hormone :
- "woman takes a pause from feminism to enjoy a song"
- (let's not discuss the lyricism nor the lyrical themes of the song here👀)
- another great fusion of hiphop and rock music
- the chord progression of the guitar throughout the song does+
+a really good job at maintaining the somewhat playful atmosphere (think of it as the troublemaker at the back of the class)
- you know it's about to get down when you hear this brass motif at the beginning you just KNOW
- why does the chorus have to be so catchy???
hip hop while/hip hop lover :
- the instrumental is very reminiscent of a late 2000's hip hop track to me somehow
- rapline's verses and vocal line's choruses alternate so well!! like rapline's great delivery combined with vocal line's smooth vocals is really bts' trademark
- current obsession : hoseok's verse and its instrumental (that little piano riff is *chef's kiss*)
- very touching lyrics about how rapline's found their passion for hiphop but could be applied to how the whole group found their passion for music
let me know :
- finally a song in this album that lets taehyung's lower register shine!! (baritones' rights!!)
- incredible lyricism again
- themes of confusion, fleeting love, a whole ao3 fic in song form
rain:
- lofi r&b jazzy coffee shop song. let me explain
- jungkook's muted vocals + those rain sound effects at the beginning
- everything about this song is soft: from the members' soft sung/soft spoken delivery to the subtle but meticulous instrumental
- "rain" RAN and passed the baton to "still with you" there I said it. jungkook's voice fits this type of song so well
- if we follow the placement of the song in the album, it's actually very coherent because it serves as a cool down song after the emotional rollercoaster+
+ that were the 5 first songs AND it's also a good resting time to prepare for what's to come
cypher pt 3 : killer (ft. garçon suprême)
- you know from the first bar that you're not surviving this
- rap line was out for blood with this one
- incredible lyricism and delivery and flow
- haunting instrumental
- kudos to yoongi for having so many wordplay that the
+ translator I'm reading from had to write EIGHT after notes to explain the whole verse and for switching from so many flows and deliveries like a fire machine
- ngl the hook is very catchy even thought it's sung (screamed? yelled?) by garçon suprême
interlude : what are you doing now
- a very groovy, funky instrumental with prominent bass and synth (?) riffs and heavenly vocals
- 42 seconds of pure bliss
- i understand why it's so short but I'm also mad at how short it is you feel me??
could you turn off you cell phone :
- a very underrated song I think
- I really love the themes of longing for true human connection and how social media affects those connections (doesn't I'm gonna turn off my cellphone any time soon tho)
- the use of sound effects really reinforces bangtan's storytelling in the song, it makes it even more lively and immersive
- the bass line of the chorus is absolutely gorgeous as wel
- i dislike boomer discourse but when it's bangtan it's okay
embarrassed/blanket kick
- this song is the embodiment of puppy love, teenage crushes, nervousness before a first date or excitement after a first date that went well (either way you can't fall asleep because of it)
- the first guitar riff has a strong effect on me
- the trumpet that accentuates the chorus his such a great choice (subtle but without it the chorus wouldn't be as memorable)
- it's a "I'll bring back your child at 10" type of song
24/7 heaven:
- this is explicitly a first date song and I think it perfectly captures that
- the chorus is *wait for it* heavenly
- jungkook using scat at the beginning,,, yup. he's secretly a jazz singer (his harmonies on yoongi's verse are something else as well)
- there's something about that d major key and that catchy drum pattern that makes you wanna fall in love
look here:
- so so catchy
- vocal line's malicious, flirty, almost soft vocals were probably responsible for some breakups at the time
- namjoon's verse probably caused a majority of the divorces in sk back in 2014
- I would very much like an updated version of this song🥰
- the brass' chord progression here is a great choice once again (in risk of repeating myself here, the subtle additions often make a song even more memorable)
- i really love the playfulness that emits from this song
2nd grade :
- this song is a huge flex, a show off, each member is literally rubbing his talent in your face
- whoever produced this (pdogg. it's pdogg.) probably had a checklist of what elements to include and I LOVE that
- namjoon's impeccable lyricism : checked
- yoongi's delivery : checked
- hoseok's versatility of flow: checked
- jungkook's raspy voice in the chorus : checked
- jimin's crazy ad libing abilities : checked
- seokjin's clear tone : checked
- taehyung's growling for days : checked
- the cockiness, the confidence of the song is unmatched!!
it somehow represents very well the arrogance of a second year student (at whatever level of education tbh)
- the feeling of invincibility after you went through the first year and you feel like+
+ a boss that can look down on the newbies and/or give them advice to navigate through this year without obstacles
outro : do you think it makes sense?
- the instrumental in this song is incredible : the clear synth pads, the fanfare sounding drums and the subtle brass motif go so well together
- vocal line are asking me to "explain it" in such a beautiful way I might just do that
- idk who's pulling those high notes at the end (most probably jimin) but you're doing very great sweetie
- the distorted low voice creates such a beautiful contrast with vocal line's beautiful high vocals
- if we follow the album's storytelling, this serves as a great outro+
+ because the lyrics here are about the confirmation of the doubts evoked in "what am I to you". the person is indeed becoming distant because they're falling out of love.
it's a full circle lyrically speaking
final overall thoughts:
dark & wild is a very cohesive, well thought of body of work. it's also a very impressive release when you think about how this is bangtan's first full length album
it's also musically interesting as it blends elements from hiphop for the most part+
+ but also from r&b music, rock music and jazz music even.
it takes a common lyrical theme as teenage romance and turns it into a complex story about unrequited love.
so,,, this is the end of this thread so if you made it to the end, congratulations 🥳 but also thank you so much 🥺💕 I really appreciate that you took time to read the whole thing (especially since this album is so lengthy!!)
