The Missouri Compromise allowed it to become a slave state which provoked the north because the anti-slavery or abolishinist movement was starting to get traction. More and more laws passed which enraged many northern supporters of the movement. 2/8

As the movement grew, the south started to fear that thier political influence would wane and the abolishonists would convince thier northern representatives to strip them of thier slaves. So they tried to bail on the union 3/8

Lincoln’s original political view about slavery was that he didn’t think the southern slave states should be disturbed. He was considered a “anti-slavery sympathizer” but was not in anyway advocating for change.

When the south threatened to leave was when his stance changed 4/8

The preliminary emancipation proclaimation was written under the pretense that Lincoln had to stop the union from breaking.

He gave the south an ultimatum: Come back to the union or WE WILL come and free your slaves.

The abolishionist movement was founded on religion and superiority.

Some white people’s sentiments were that freeing the slaves and making them SLIGHTLY more equal to them meant they were morally superior to those who opposed it. The past equivalent of clout chasing. 6/8

If you actually read Lincolns debates and look at the fine print. It really destroys the illusion of “The Great Emancipator”
