A pattern in America’s pandemic politics that’s getting ugly:

HEALTH AND ECONOMICS EXPERTS: We must take these emergency measures, or people will suffer and maybe die.

POLITICIANS: Nah, we don’t need to do that.

*people suffer and die*

POLITICIANS: Okay, we’ll try some of it.

We were told, relentlessly, by smart people, that reopening without social distancing would lead to more viral transmission. We did it anyway, and now the virus is raging back.

We know that cutting off CARES Act benefits will crash the economy.

And we’re poised to do it anyway.

You really have to ask, how many human lives are we willing to sacrifice so that politicians can keep getting off to their fantasy of a pandemic response that doesn’t include a massive expansion of the social safety net?

This is why tens of thousands of Americans are still dying
