before i start, let me just say: i am NOT trying to argue that he is better than any character or that he is the most useful, i am simply saying that he is not useless. that is all.
i will be consulting both the show and comic series for this thread, because itâs been confirmed that the comics are canon. since barely any of s1 is told through willâs perspective, iâm gonna use the comics mostly for half of the thread.
1. letâs start all the way at the beginning: in the very first 15 minutes of episode one. while being chased by the demogorgon, will runs into the shed behind his house and loads a gun. 12 year old will byers KNOWS HOW TO LOAD AND PROBABLY SHOOT A GUN.
we donât see will shoot the gun in the show, but the comics confirm that once he ends up in the upside down, HE SHOOTS THE DEMOGORGON IN/NEAR THE MOUTH WITH HIS GUN. 12 year old will byers just got attacked by a 10-foot monster and got transported to another dimensionâ
âyet still managed to be brave enough to shoot it in the face. but yeah, heâs the weakest character.
2. despite being utterly traumatized, will still manages to communicate with his mom. according to the comics, he tries calling his friends on his walkie, but instead contacts his mom. when the demogorgon finds him, he sacrifices his opportunity to let his mom know what happenedâ
âand the opportunity to run to safety so he can attack the monster. it may not have been his smartest decision, but it showcases his bravery that many people in this fandom forget about.
3. later, will is trying to figure out how his mom contacted him, and realized she was on the phone. so, he calls her again.
4. itâs revealed that will heard barbâs screams in the pool, but he didnât get to her in time. he beat himself up about it, both for not saving her and for feeling relieved that he wasnât the one taken that night. wasnât a âusefulâ thing he did, but thought it was v interesting.
5. in the real world, will unintentionally makes lights turn on as he moves throughout the upside down, or just whenever really, as weâve seen in the series. this leads to joyce figuring out how to communicate with him.
will somehow manages to control the fairy lights in the real world, causing them to blink when he blinks his eyes. and when joyce writes the alphabet on the wall, will spells out words just by tapping them.
7. when will realizes that the demogorgon is tearing into the real world through the wall, he doesnât take the opportunity to escape. he instead distracts the demogorgon and has it chase him because heâd rather be alone forever than have his mother die.
8. will was able to hear the tv when his death was announced. he ran straight home and tried to spell ânot deadâ and contact his mother, but she wasnât home. he tries turning on the radio, but it doesnât work, so he starts singing âshould i stay or should i go?â into the comm,â
âwhich is overheard by el and mike, and leads them to believe heâs still alive. i canât find the clip, but itâs the scene in 1x04 where mike yells at el for âlyingâ about will being alive.
9. will also lets his mother know heâs alive. once the monster finds him (again), he lets him chase after him instead of going after his mom (again).
10. this is one of my personal favorite will moments that nobody really talks about. the comics reveal that will was also there when nancy was in the upside down, and was also THE ONLY REASON SHE SURVIVED. watch this clip closely â the monster was about to find her, if not forâ
âa distraction. instead of taking the chance to escape and reunite with his brother just outside the portal, will saved nancyâs life. he threw a rock at a tree, giving nancy the time she needs to escape, causing him to be left alone again.
after that, willâs too weak from lack of breathable air and starvation to really do anything else + gets taken and rescued, so weâre gonna skip to s2.
