At face value, this job/salary from Vayner look absolutely egregious. I had to dig in to find out more about what’s happening here. How could this POSSIBLY be real?

First, here’s what I believe to be the job in question: https://boards.greenhouse.io/vaynermedia/jobs/2218771 https://twitter.com/melsanie/status/1276601510395121664
One thing to consider is that in NYC, the minimum salary for an *overtime exempt* employee is $58.5k. So the job in question is almost certainly not a salaried position, and will allow for the employee to earn overtime pay.
So, at face value, $32.5k is shocking, but less so when you consider what the normal workload is for a social media content creator in this industry.

Let’s assume 10 hour days, 50 hours a week. With overtime, the job would pay $42.9k. Still low, but not as shocking.
If you bump that up to 60 hours a week, which is not at all uncommon for social media managers, the role is earning $54.6k a year. Not far off from the overtime exempt salary minimum of $58.5k anymore
All this isn’t to say that this job is acceptable. It’s pretty exploitative of people trying to get a start in the industry.

But the more important point is to look out for wolf in sheep’s clothing social roles, offering $58.5k salaries but ask you to work 60+ hrs/wk
And this isn’t AT ALL uncommon. Community managers and social media managers at agencies are accustomed to working upwards of 70 hours a week.

All of a sudden, $15 an hour with overtime isn’t such a bad deal.
We need to have a conversation about the normalization of the heavy workloads employees face in social media marketing.

These are high visibility, high pressure roles, and being overworked isn’t good for mental health or job performance.
So I’ll conclude this thread with a poll for anyone who works in social media marketing. How many hours per week do you work on average?
