Been reflecting on @k12albemarle STILL not banning confederate imagery in the schools. Not after the civil rights movement. Not after August 12th. Not after George Floyd. And not after NASCAR even. Honestly what will it take to move you to protect Black lives? #BlackLivesMattter
Please write the school board and let them know where you stand on this issue. Help them understand it can wait no more. Protecting the psychological learning environment of Black children is nonnegotiable. Confederate imagery must be unapologetically banned. Join @hatefreeacps
In 1964 Nina Simone sang for her life. She warned of civil rights coming “too slow.” We haven’t listened. We have failed her and others who have sounded the alarm with their art and activism for decades, for centuries. It’s 2020. Could @k12albemarle possibly move any slower???
I’m a White male. This issue doesn’t affect me directly. But I care. I care about Black children. I care about Black families. I listen to Black mothers and fathers. This is something they are asking for. The Board has actively undervalued their voices over the last few years.
Banning confederate imagery is just one step among many important actions the Board must take around educational equity, but it is important and symbolic as children cannot be expected to learn in a space that is physically or emotionally unsafe or threatening to begin with.
Please join me in writing to the school board. Encourage them to not just listen, but to act. This should have been done years ago & is morally wrong to delay any longer. Help them understand it should be their honor, not their burden, to ban confederate imagery once & for all.
You may write the Board at: [email protected] THANK YOU #BanItNow #BlackLivesMatter
