*Thread* When we find out there will be a new royal baby we all get so excited, though like most we truly can’t wait to see the proud parents holding their baby outside the Lindo Wing at St. Marys Hospital in London. This hospital has been the location for several royal births,
the last one being with Prince Louis in April 2018. This tradition first started with Princess Anne in 1977 when she gave birth to her son Peter. We got a small glimpse of Peter when Princess Anne was outside the hospital thanking the staff. It wasn’t until she gave birth to her
daughter Zara in 1981 that a royal baby would officially be pictured in front of the hospital. Princess Diana would follow in her sister-in-laws footsteps with Princes William in 1982 and Harry in 1984. Prince William was the first heir to be born in a hospital, as with all four
of her pregnancies Queen Elizabeth would safely deliver her children at Buckingham Palace. Princess Beatrice (1988) and Eugenie (1990), though born at Portland Hospital their parent’s continued the tradition of having their photos taken outside the hospital.
As the world waits for the birth of the new royal baby, many media outlets wait outside the hospital in anticipation for what could be up to a month! The Duchess of Cambridge kept the tradition going of giving birth at the Lindo Wing with all three of her pregnancies.
Each time she stepped out in front of the hospital to present her children to the world, she gave a special tribute to her mother-in-law Princess Diana by wearing colours she had previously done with both William and Harry.
Duchess Catherine, had a large team of 20 doctors working with her during her pregnancies including the Queen's surgeon gynaecologist. They would be on call three months prior to her due date. When the Queen gave birth to Prince Charles, it was the first royal birth that was
not attended by the British Home Secretary. In earlier years it was required that they are present to witness and verify the births of royal children. Once a royal baby is born, Queen Elizabeth will be the first to be notified. Followed by the Prime Minister and the Governors
Governors Generals of each of the Commonwealth nations will be informed, then the rest of the royal family and extended family. Celebratory gun salutes will be sounded by the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery in Green Park (41 rounds) and the Honorable Artillery Company
at the Tower of London (62 rounds). In 1837 when Buckingham Palace became the official residence, the tradition of placing the birth announcement outside on a golden easel began. Most recently with the use of social media, the palaces have now been sending out notifications.
This draws so much excitement when there is a new royal baby. As soon as the news breaks, crowds swarm the hospital hoping to get a chance to see the royal couple and their new baby. Hopefully soon, we will have another royal baby and see the tradition continue!
