Ok New Yorkers here’s our chance to get local politicians to do something about defunding the police:

On June 30th, the 51 separate district council members are going to vote on a bill that would decrease the NYPD’s $6 billion funding. Most likely by $1 billion.
We need 26 votes. The good news is, looking at the tracker I’ve found (which I will link in this thread), we have 39 council folk who are generally supportive of cutting the budget.

But there’s a problem and it’s definitely one that we can do something about.
Right now, only 9 have explicitly stated they’d vote against a bill that didn’t focus on a significant cut. So we’ve only really secured 9 votes for our cause.

We need to poke and prod the other 30 to get what we want. I’d imagine at least 17 of those folks are receptive.
So how do we do this?

The tracker! It has every council member’s commitments, amount of money accepted from police organizations, whether or not they’re running in 2020/2021, and all their official contacts - email, office phone, webpages, Twitter,

A lot of these folks have issued public statements on Twitter, despite not having an official commitment to stand on. They’re all linked in the drive. I’m starting by commenting there. If I have time during my shifts today, I’m gonna make calls too.

I’ll clip sample tweets here:
