I’ve been reading @DavidOlusoga excellent book Black & British and watching the series on BBC4. It starts at Bunce Island in Sierra Leone. Resonates strongly as I was in Freetown in February, here at The Cotton Tree, symbol of the city’s founding by freed slaves in 1792
In 2018 we visited the “Slave Steps” just down Walpole St from the Cotton Tree where the slave trade started before Bunce Island was established. It’s now part of a slum community but shackles still evident on the walls of the wharf
Despite the abolition of slavery, 150 years as a colony, and nearly 60 years of independence, Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries on earth. We have a long way to go to right the wrongs of 400 years. That’s why #blacklivesmatter
