Imagine being the creator of some of the best-loved sitcoms of recent decades, then getting so mad that people called one of your shows transphobic that you proceed to go down a poisonous rabbit hole of bigotry and tank your whole life.
Years ago, we coined the phrase "never tweet your heroes", and Glinner was who we had in mind. Back in the early 2010s, he was a pretty central figure on British twitter.
When you start out On Here, you follow all your blue tick faves. Used to be Stephen Fry and Glinner who were basically a Twitter Starter Pack in 2012ish.
There's a reason that a large number of celebrities who got famous pre-social media have Twitters run by their management now. For a few years it was the Wild West, with blue ticks *constantly* fucking up.
It didn't take long for most people to realise that all their favourite people were, without writers and cameras and editors to filter them, absolute shits.
Look at G*rvais ffs!
As a former fan, we followed him for a long time, until it slowly dawned on us that, unlike a lot of other comedians we followed at the time, he wasn't *funny* on here. He was just alternately smug and cruel.
It's hard to imagine now, but Glinner was once the celebrity voice of leftish causes on here. Basically, he was the one boosting every cool, progressive thing happening online. He was called a "Twitter Warrior", known for being on the right side of our then culture wars.
He never really was, of course. It was just vague liberalism. You can get it from any blue tick now, mostly.
But there's a lesson here: you can get used to being Right On. You can start to believe your own bullshit, and when you get criticised by your "own side", you assume the attack must be from the "other side".
Because *you* are one of the Good Guys, right? So there must be something wrong with the people saying you fucked up.
But it turns out there aren't just two sides, and no one is above reproach. No one, anywhere, has earned enough cachet to do whatever they want without consequence.
So, never tweet your heroes, and stan no one.
