THREAD:
Causes I sympathise with but were hijacked by the anti-Israel, pro-CCP hard-left:
1) Stop the War
2) Occupy
3) Women’s Movement
4) XR
5) Labour Party
6) BLM
The Left warns the Right to guard against Far-Right, but is generally abysmal at guarding its own left flank. Why?
My view: after we defeated Hitler with the aid of totalitarian Soviets, our societies never really gained emotional closure with communism. It became taboo to be a Nazi but not a communist, who claims to speak “for the people” while leading us like a pied-piper, to ruin
Nazis were defeated & routed, while after the Cold War (did it ever end?) communists (especially in Western Europe) were integrated & appeased. Thus began the Long March of deconstructionism (which like every idea in moderation, has merit) through our institutions.
Controversially, the Long March of our university-class relativists led to a *leftward* institutional drift, while becoming disconnected from people’s needs, creating precisely what institutions seek to avoid: ‘extractive institutions’ exploitative & divorced from the people
Once institutional drift sets in (institutions growing out of touch) it creates a vicious cycle as demands for reform grow louder by the Left, in turn creating fiercer attempts to resist by the Right. Society feels like its tearing itself apart. The blind spot was in our Left eye
These tensions can be resolved through a bit of pragmatic wisdom & inclusivity (and in fact, can make us stronger) but they are ripe for exploitation by foreign powers. So now back to communism —>
Soviets were defeated in the Cold War and the USSR collapsed, but of course what we collectively failed to recognise was that the Empire lived on, the CCP’s tyranny in China. It took #Covid19 to shake many out of slumber & awaken us to precisely what the genocidal PRC is doing
And so, while the PRC was busy reaping rewards of globalisation by trading slave labour for our greed, she began to dominate global supply chains, buy up infrastructure & natural resources everywhere as collateral, while Xi established himself as Emporer https://unherd.com/2020/04/china-is-preparing-for-war/
A combination of our institutional drift & foreign power exploitation of these domestic cracks has led to what we witness: polarising demands by uncompromising activists on both ends

Our cultural establishment has gone hard left. In reply, our political establishment, hard right
This is why we are witnessing the retreat of rationalists. As ‘patriots’ defend against ideological saboteurs, a vicious circle of institutional failure kicks in & deteriorates.

Not seeing this coming is unforgivable, driven by money & greed (mainly by centrists)

So what to do?
This requires people with an unbreakable commitment to pragmatism. People prepared to sacrifice..for moderation. Sounds weird right? No grand ideology? Yes. In times of resurgent ideological passion (which is usually destructive), only love for humanity has the power to transcend
This moment requires us to think right wing thoughts with our heads, while feeling left wing emotions with our hearts. It is harder than anything, and will lose you many friends & loved ones. But I promise you...
..after everyone tires of screaming at each other, they’ll come back to you debilitated, respectful of your general consistency, pleading for your help to make it all stop.

This is not a principle-free stance. It is a stance with the deepest commitment to principle:
