Let’s talk about sexual assault. #WS375
This week specifically, there has been an increase in traction and awareness on the topic of sexual assault survivors. However, there is minor pushback from some who do not believe in every survivor’s story. #WS375
“He wouldn’t do that,” “I’ve known him for years,” “She was all over him,” It’s what she was wearing...” #WS375
Let me tell you this: she was NOT asking for it. #WS375
In the heat of the BLM movement and discussion of defunding the police, it is important that we highlight another painful topic in the media. #WS375
Though this thread could go on forever, primarily what I want to discuss is the concept of “false accusations.” #WS375
Of all of the sexual assault cases that are reported on (estimated to be less than 40% of total cases), less than 0.1% are false claims. #WS375
However, the claims that are proven to be false, such as various accounts that have targeted celebrities like Justin Bieber, could have been greatly detrimental to the professional and personal lives of the falsely accused. #WS375
Therefore, it is important to believe and trust sexual assault survivors who come forward and share their stories. It is very necessary to help them during their struggle for justice. #WS375
But it is also important for people who have not be assaulted to use their platforms to support these survivors; not to spread lies in order to gain a social media following or the attention of a celebrity. #WS375
Social media is an incredible powerful tool in the advocation of justice, equality, and awareness, however we must use it to spread information responsibly and support a strong community of survivors. #WS375
