A lot of people get upset or defensive when I express I don& #39;t like cars, they take it as a personal attack. It& #39;s not. Here& #39;s a few reasons I don& #39;t like cars. 1/
First grade. Playing in our yard after school, heard screeching tires. Parents told us to go inside & stay there. A girl in my class, scared by a dog, ran from it & was hit by a parent driving to school. She had serious head injuries & did not return for a long time. 2/
When I was somewhere between grade 5-7, a class mate was hit in his driveway by one of his parents backing out their SUV. I don& #39;t recall his injuries.3/
When my cousin was walking home from high school, a driver hit him, on his street, & drove off. 4/
A girl in an after school program I was in, was killed in a crash involving a vehicle running a stop sign. I don& #39;t know which vehicle ran the stop sign.5/
A friend I met on twitter recounted a story to me where he was hit by a city vehicle while riding his bike as a teen.6/
A 5 year old child was killed when he was struck by a garbage truck driver in our city(I don& #39;t know the year). That driver is now a city councillor & often votes against traffic calming & bike lanes. He takes pictures while driving, including to capture his high speed. 7/
In my 20s, someone I was working with had to leave the job midday. He had received a phone call that his daughter & her partner had been killed in a crash. He had to take care of their child after that 8/
As a pedestrian I have had countless close calls from drivers not paying attention & violating my right of way (drivers turning at high speed without looking while I was correctly using a crosswalk for example) 9/
As a cyclist, I have had countless close calls from unsafe passes & turning drivers cutting me off. I have had homophobic slurs shouted at me on more than 1 occasion. I have been harassed for being on the road. I have been threatened. I have been hit twice.10/
Though I had no desire of getting a license, at 16, I did. Because that& #39;s what you do here.
I accepted without question that all of this must have been an unavoidable consequence of our need to get around. It doesn& #39;t have to be.
