Still processing what happened tonight at A&M but here are few of my observations and questions... These older white dudes literally went out of their way to confront these current students. One of them admitted to me that he drove down from Dallas for this. (1/8)
Who in their right mind is going to drop what they’re doing and drive the ~3 hours on a Friday afternoon to stand in opposition of college students peacefully protesting? Like, what is going through his mind that tells him this is a good idea? (2/8)
I even asked this particular guy from Dallas a few questions to try and understand his reasoning. He failed to adequately explain himself. I also asked him and one other guy if they were a part of any particular organization, outside of attending A&M. Radio silence. (3/8)
I asked again. Silence. Now, were they silent because they saw me filming earlier and were nervous? Something to hide? Why would you be so bold as to come all this way and then clam up at the opportunity to explain? As a filmmaker I was genuinely trying to understand them. (4/8)
One old guy was wild enough to ask the college students the classically pathetic question “why are y’all protesting against Sully but not protesting the killings in Chicago?” Vomit. I laughed out loud at him and I believe he then called me “Frog mouth” whatever that means? (5/8)
Another guy tried to mansplain to the students how “Aggies are just Aggies. There’s no such thing as ‘Blaggies’ or ‘Whities’ we’re just Aggies.” My eyes almost popped out of my head. It took an awful lot of restraint from the students at this moment, among others. (6/8)
A student asked this same fellow if he identifies as being an Aggie more than anything else, including if he identifies as an Aggie before being a dad. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised but his answer was yes, being an Aggie comes first before being a father. (7/8)
Lord have mercy... These men do not represent me, and they certainly do not represent what Texas A&M University should stand for. I’m embarrassed. Being ‘not-racist’ is simply not enough, we must make a commitment to be anti-racist. One step at a time. (8/8)
