Throwing on the Poltergeist remake.

Honestly only bought the DVD for $5 at Walmart because it came with a coloring book.

It's a kind of movie I watch because, even if it's bad, I'll be able to listen to a few podcast episodes on it.

It better be respectful...

Multiple supernatural manifestations within 9 minutes? Movie, you got a lot of confidence for the early game.
Poltergeist remake just might be telegraphing things harder than a nineteenth-century Morse code addict making wedding announcement.

The '82 Poltergeist trusted the audience to roll with events.

Zelda Rubenstein is not foreshadowed at all in the first act.

I think I already know who do the supernatural expert is going to be and what the big act 3 disaster is going to be, 11 minutes in.

Wife: He has an attic room! I was obsessed with attic rooms! Crawlspaces, attic windows...

Me: Imprisoned incestuous siblings...
There's a visual change to the new static scene in the Poltergeist remake.

I like it.

I don't remakes to do the exact same thing.

They should branch off in New Directions.

I just want them to be done well.
The Poltergeist remake has a great little scene.

The dad has multiple maxed-out credit cards declined by a cashier.

1: Instant sympathy; the actor plays it well.

2: Stephen King described the Amityville Horror as an economic nightmare for the middle class. Same idea.
The Poltergeist remake finally find its footing in Act 2, where it starts riffing in new ways on familiar scenes.

Not all of them work, but there's one really nice scene with a power drill.

Poltergeist remake dropped the big reveal from a first one with a half an hour of movie left.

And I'm kind of okay with it?

Because you can't really rely on a famous reveal from 1982 to surprise an audience.
Wife: This isn't bad. I mean, it has to live up to Poltergeist, but I've seen lots of shittier horror movies on Amazon Prime.

Me: Damning with faint praise?
So this version of poltergeist try to justify the relationship between the medium and the parapsychologist and the scene is WONDERFUL and I LOVE IT.
Oooh.

Good news: A modern day Poltergeist means the big rescue plan can include a cheap RC drone and GPS.

Bad news: Did you think we needed to unambiguously see what the Other Side looks like? Because the filmmakers did.
So.

Poltergeist remake.

C+ to B-.

Hard to live up to the legacy, You don't love the characters as much, but it's passable and has some nifty new bits.
