A thread, #Disability trivia and an appeal for disability advocates with $ to donate to @LutherPlace & support their #BlackLivesMatter efforts. #BlackDisabledLivesMatter 1/8
In 1977, 25 disabled protestors traveled to #DC. @LutherPlace provided them hospitality. The activists were a contingent from the 504 Sit-In. They demanded the gov’t make good on their promise to prohibit discrimination based on disability in programs receiving Fed $. 2/8
Close to 120 protestors occupied the HEW bldg in San Francisco for 24 days. The Black Panther Party, unions, and others supported the protestors. The disability rights movement will always be in their debt. 3/8
Luther Place's Pastor Steinbruck invited President Carter to a prayer breakfast to meet with the disabled activists, and promised, "What the [disabled] give to Luther Place, they can give to you and our nation.” 4/8
The Luther Place prayer breakfast was held just prior to a large rally at Lafayette Park (the sometimes-accessible park in front of the White House). The Sit-In was successful and Section 504 of the Rehab Act regs were signed two days later. 5/8
All that to say, if you are a disability advocate or activist with $ and you’d like to give back to a church and the communities that supported our fight & the 504 Sit-In 40+ years ago, now’s your chance. 6/8
Also, feel free to fact-check me, or add, if you were there in ’77. This thread in honor of my friend Mary Jane. With love & gratitude for the protestors and the helpers. #BlackDisabledLivesMatter. 8/8
