I've had a few people ask about the journalism principles that I mentioned on air today. They were inscribed in stone in 1917 at the former Detroit News building, where I was a naive but eager intern. I'll start the thread with "remembrancer" — one of my favorites.
These images all come from the late Mark Hinojosa. I only learned tonight, in prepping this, that he passed in February. Mark lovingly documented the News building before the staff relocated: https://mshinojosa.tumblr.com/
Taken together, the 10 panels throw down quite a mandate for reporters. Bonus vocab boosting too, like "upbuilder."
I haven't searched for the full background/origin on this idea of "a light shining into all dark places," but it clearly endures to this day in investigative reporting.
Finally, the journalist's relationship with the public: mirror, interpreter, and "troubler of the public conscience." I want to make sure I think about this every day.
