So much of the early history of microbiology and epidemiology is tied to India- not just Ross and malaria or Brahmachari and the treatment for leishmaniasis but the first clinical trials, the first understanding of herd immunity, and the first plasma therapy.
This is a seminal paper in Proceedings of the Royal Society by W. O. Kermack and A. G. McKendrick on the plague epidemic in Bombay (1905-1906) with a mathematical derivation of herd immunity.

McKendrick had worked for the Indian Medical Service, and had assisted Ross for years
