Zuckerberg saying Facebook will prohibit hate speech is too little too late. He and Sandberg both have to go. If it even can, the board of Facebook has to fire Zuckerberg and Sandberg. Nothing less than that means anything at this point. FB engineers should, if they can, continue leaving the company and announcing publicly they are doing so.
I hate to say it, but the #StopHateForProfit campaign is essentially just helping corporations launder their press releases at this point. So Zuckerberg making this announcement about prohibiting hate speech is just him trying to get ahead of what _actually_ needs to happen which is that he and Sheryl Sandberg need to get fired.
An _actual_ boycott would have firing Zuckerberg & Sandberg as its call to action, not this weak sauce "stop spending money on FB in July but not really" stuff. Activists shouldn't help corporations launder their press releases.
The biggest mistake would be for people of conscience to declare Zuckerberg's statement a victory of any kind. Facebook is still open for business for any kind of lie you'll pay to push there. Until Zuckerberg and Sandberg are no longer at the helm, that will continue to be true.
Watch @Unilever for next moves. They've made the biggest commitment of any of the "boycotting" companies. If Unil. feels Zuck's stmt. gives it enough cover to return to 100% of its pre-July FB spend, FB will simply carry on hosting disinfo as its biz model & nothing will change.
Hell, if you want to do your part send an email to [email protected] and ask her if Zuckerberg's statement today means Unilever will go back to spending $$$ on FB in 2020. See what she says.
Finally, reminder that in 2018 Zuck hired a former CIA operative as FB's global head of election integrity so he could get some good press out of it, then changed her title after exactly one day on the job.
