Okay so the point of this thread: going back to 2005, only 6 of the last 19 1st overall picks are viewed in fans eyes as the top talent out of the draft (MacKinnon, Matthews, McDavid, Crosby, Tavares and Kane).

So is winnning the 1st overall pick as big of a deal as we think 1/
it is? This small sample size experiment would say no, kind of. It suggests that there’s about a 33% chance that the #1 overall pick turns out to be the top player in his draft, but many of those players were considered to be generational talents 2/
Including Crosby, Tavares and McDavid who were given exceptional statuses to play in the CHL at a younger age, something Lafreniere didn’t get.

Can you group Lafreniere with some of the absolute best players in the league? I don’t think you can.
Am I saying that I don’t think Laf isn’t the best player in this draft? No. But I am just making it known that historical data suggests that there is the possibility that the best player is somewhere else in the draft.
My other point is I think sometimes people get too sold on “This guy is the consensus #1.” Hello Yakupov, Hischier/Patrick, Erik Johnson, RNH, and Ekblad.

Looking back, none of those would go at 1.01.
So just remember this. The point was to open your mind that just because your team isn’t at 1.01 doesn’t mean they aren’t getting a phenomal player. Who knows, maybe they’ll actually hit the jackpot.
