okay lemme break this down all nice & simple, y’all.
- having children is a choice
- not having children is a choice
- privilege is by definition, an unearned advantage — you can’t opt in or out of it
- therefore, this thread is bullshit https://twitter.com/izs/status/1276424491048947712

the entire premise / leverage of this dude’s argument is that as a parent you are maintaining human life on the planet.
that’s
a
choice
humans have evolved past our base animal instincts where we live to reproduce. our lives are so much more complex than that.
that’s

you want to act like carrying on the species makes you a martyr? dude.
human overpopulation is a thing, y’know. we are on a straight balls-to-the-wall trajectory to massively fuck up this planet.
reproducing is not providing any boons to society or our species as a whole.

now we can acknowledge that parenthood isn’t always a choice for every parent. access to abortion or adoption isn’t available for everyone. I get that. but when speaking generally, it’s fair to assume that a majority of parents made the choice to raise kids.
there is a difference between “privilege” and basic advantages / disadvantages in life. let’s not pretend that parents don’t have any kind of advantages over childless individuals or couples. we are seen as inherently more selfish, less responsible, & receive less social support.
women in particular who don’t have kids past a certain age are marginalized & stigmatized in western society.
in the workforce, childless individuals are more likely to have the importance of their work / life balance overlooked.

don’t get me wrong, I absolutely think that my life as a childless individual is easier than that of a parent. I chose that for myself.
I absolutely think that parents & families deserve more systemic support!! but there are tons of other socio-economic factors involved here, and calling it a privilege to be childless feels like extreme oversimplification.
ALSO, you know how we’re in the middle of a major movement for Black lives and acknowledging / combating white privilege?
Maybe not the time for this, bud. There are more important inequalities to challenge right now.
