While on the topic, since I finished The Last of Us Part 2, wanna drop a little thread of my thoughts on the game, now the credits are rolling literally as I type this

I love it and think it deserves the praise it received, but I wanna share a few (spoiler-free) thoughts on it
It helps to play them so close together, but every aspect of this is a step up from the original

Whereas I find the original suffers from being a game, especially in how it feels more like a series of levels than the cross-country journey it portrays, the opposite is true here
The journey Ellie goes on is elevated by the increased encouragement the game gives to explore each area, which feel far more like lived-in locations than before

Optional content really helps sell the lived-in nature of the world, and the game would fall apart without it imo
I can’t help but wish the first moment you hit Seattle, where you’re given a map and have a pseudo-open world area to explore, was expanded upon for more aspects of the game, as later areas never felt quite this liberating or inspiring... every area was superbly put together
The far greater emphasis on stealth compared to the original elevates every fight

I was sometimes in single fights for 1 hour+ as I devised and executed plans, sneaking around and breathing and moving in one with my actions... it all felt in-character and is superb every step.
Last thing on gameplay, tho I guess it links to story: it& #39;s too long

I clocked in over 25 hours, and while it never overstayed its welcome, it could’ve been 5-10 hours shorter while retaining the same impact. Possibly would have preferred it

Need to sit on that tho
Before going into story, going to link my views on how it handles transness since I want to compile all my thoughts on the game together https://twitter.com/socialanigirl/status/1276645224476028930?s=20">https://twitter.com/socialani...
Otherwise, story was superb

The type of story being told isn’t necessarily anything new. It’s a tale of revenge that emphasizes the futility and cruelty of violence without motive and how revenge morphs people. It’s played out before in movies and games before, and yet...
It’s gameplay that sets it apart

As a story all about facing the consequences of your actions/past, the game is great at walking the line between making you feel the necessity to kill while, in that same sequence, forcing you to reconcile with those deaths and your actions
(Although facing your consequences is not achieved by NPCs shouting the names of the fallen people all around them, which feels increasingly shallow as time goes on... that wasn& #39;t necessary, at all)
So what if the story is nothing new, if it weaves it through gameplay this well to create an experience entirely unique?

Few games that have tried to similarly integrate these ideas have succeeded at coming close to the level this game is able to achieve at doing this
Yet perhaps my favorite moments come in its more intimate displays of human connection

Ellie and Dina’s romance is really great, and the quiet moments of them together expressing their love for one another are moments that brought me to tears more than once
Seeing such genuinely happy queer love in a major release is great

Last of Us Part 2 is as much about love as it is about hate, which is why it& #39;s such a shame Sony emphasized the latter to the point I was put off and disinterested in this game till friends informed me otherwise
While I understand some of the frustration in moments where the game laboriously tries to weave its systems together to blunt your head with & #39;shocker: actions have consequences& #39;, the story cares far more about human intimacy and finding new hope

And it THRIVES in these moments
I’m going to wrap this up as I would want to let my thoughts on the game simmer further and I don’t want this thread to be too long, but I have to say I loved almost every minute of this game

Tbh, Last of Us Part 2 probably stands as my fav game on PS4, and a perfect swan song.
I& #39;m probably going to be thinking about this game and these characters for a long time to come

Saying that, I wouldn’t want the praise the game has received generally to gloss over the criticism Naughty Dog deserve for their practices of crunch and working conditions
