Y'all. Seriously. We are nowhere near the end of COVID-19, or physical distancing or serious efforts to mitigate the spread to prevent the healthcare system from closing down.
We're talking MONTHS AND MONTHS.
We're talking MONTHS AND MONTHS.
I'm noticing that people across the spectrum are talking about a "second wave," and acting like we've made it passed something. This is not true at all.
NYC and surrounding areas could have a second wave. The rest of us are still ramping toward our first wave. And, WOW, we are handling this poorly. It's hard for me to imagine how we could handle it more poorly.
Other countries are mitigating the virus. We aren't (and neither is Brazil). What's different?
Rugged. Fucking. Individualism.
Rugged. Fucking. Individualism.
Total lockdowns stop case spread enough to then alllow symptom screening, widespread testing, contract tracing, and social distancing to keep the viral spread at a manageable level over time.
We aren't doing *any* of that well in the USA.

If you want to see people again, STAY HOME. When you go out, WHERE A MASK and KEEP YOUR DISTANCE.
Asymptomic spread is a big problem--you can't self-asses that you or your friends are "safe" together.

Recent data tells us maybe 20 million people in the US could have already been infected. That is a lot, but wildly short of the herd immunity we need to be safe. In the meantime, COVID can still kill a lot of people, possibly MILLIONS.
None of this has changed. And yet, people are acting like it has.
And guess what? You can have a mild or asymptomatic case of COVID-19, get over it, and then develop a COVID-based Multiple Inflammation Syndrome that can be debilitating for months. MONTHS. SO far, this seems to impact younger people MORE than older people.
WEAR A MASK. WASH YOUR HANDS. KEEP YOUR DISTANCE. We have to get on board for this into 2021 or even 2022, folks. Grieve however you need to grieve and then get on board, because right now, the virus is winning--and we're letting it.
Other than in NYC and the surrounding areas, going out now is MORE DANGEROUS that going out in March was.
COME ON.
COME ON.
